Real Madrid Faces Four-Month Absence of Militao: A Defensive Crisis
LaLiga saw a significant setback for Real Madrid as they confirmed that Eder Militao will be sidelined for four months due to a left hamstring tear accompanied by a tendon injury. This injury strikes hard at a defense already ravaged by previous injuries.
The Brazilian defender’s absence marks a critical blow for Real Madrid. Following medical assessments, it has been confirmed that Militao is unlikely to return until at least April 2026. In a best-case scenario, he might make a comeback a fortnight earlier, yet this still leaves him unavailable for nearly the entire season, including key tournaments like the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de España, and the early stages of the Champions League.
Militao’s injury occurred during the first half of the match against Celta Vigo in La Liga’s 15th round on December 8. While attempting to thwart a sprint by Pablo Duran, Militao unexpectedly clutched his left thigh and fell to the ground in pain. Vinicius immediately signaled for a substitution. Subsequent MRI scans confirmed the worst fears of the medical staff.

This is Militao’s third injury this season, with the earlier two being relatively minor—one during the Madrid derby and another while playing for Brazil against Tunisia in November. However, this latest injury is by far the most serious.
Adding to the team’s woes, Militao becomes the sixth defender from Real Madrid to require treatment. Dani Carvajal, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, David Alaba, and Ferland Mendy are also nursing injuries, leaving a staggering 60% of the defense unavailable. Coach Xabi Alonso is now left with only four fit defenders: Rüdiger, Asencio, Carreras, and Fran García.
In light of these circumstances, Real Madrid is compelled to adapt quickly. Young player Joan Martinez will continue with the first team, and other youthful talents may also be promoted. Valverde may need to step up as a full-back, while Tchouameni could be tested in a central defender’s role. Camavinga is likely to revert to the left flank for the challenging clash against Alavés, especially with Carreras and Fran García both suspended.
As Real Madrid enters one of the toughest stretches of the season without Militao and nearly half of their defensive lineup, they face a daunting strategic challenge with no straightforward solutions in sight.
